Wedoany.com Report on Mar 16th, This week, the tech industry witnessed a landmark deal: Google has officially completed the acquisition of cybersecurity firm Wiz, with a total transaction value reaching a staggering $32 billion. This not only sets a new record for the largest acquisition amount in Google's history but also becomes the largest-ever acquisition of a venture capital-backed startup.
Shardul Shah, a partner at Index Ventures, a prominent venture capital firm and the largest shareholder in Wiz, shared the investment story behind this massive deal on TechCrunch's Equity podcast. He recalled that his connection with Wiz's three founders—Assaf Rappaport, Ami Luttwak, and Roy Reznik—dates back a decade, when he joined the board of their first cybersecurity company, Adallom. He has witnessed the founding team's complete growth journey from Adallom to Wiz.
In Shah's view, Wiz becoming Google's acquisition target was no accident. He clearly stated, "Wiz is at the center of three tailwinds: artificial intelligence, cloud, and security spending." This assessment accurately summarizes Wiz's strategic value—in the AI era, as enterprise workloads rapidly migrate to the cloud, securing cloud infrastructure and code becomes paramount, and Wiz precisely focuses on this core area.
Shah revealed that although Google had previously made acquisition offers to Wiz that were rejected, he always maintained high trust in the founding team's decision-making ability, believing they understood the company's long-term direction better than anyone else. The final $32 billion deal is the best validation of the founders' judgment and the team's execution.
From a business perspective, Wiz's customers are mostly large-scale cloud infrastructure users, jokingly referred to as members of the "zero critical club." Google's resources and AI talent pool will help Wiz further expand its technical capabilities and market reach while preserving its culture of trust.
The impact of this deal extends far beyond the two companies themselves. Shah believes that the successful completion of such a large-scale acquisition will not only change the life trajectories of Wiz's founding team, investors, and employees but, more importantly, send a powerful signal to entrepreneurs worldwide: even in a tightening capital environment, solid technological innovation and precise strategic positioning can still create historic exit opportunities. This demonstration effect is expected to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs and drive continuous innovation across the entire startup ecosystem.
