Wedoany.com Report on Mar 19th, A new study by the nonprofit housing advocacy group Enterprise Community Partners reveals that California transportation agencies own nearly 3,000 parcels of land available for housing development. It is reported that the identified approximately 8,000 acres of land held by California transportation agencies could be developed into up to 240,000 units of affordable housing, with 22% currently vacant or used as parking lots.

Several agencies, such as LA Metro and Santa Cruz Metro, already have transit-oriented development projects aimed at increasing the supply of housing on land near transit stations. According to the report, among these parcels available for housing, 82% are located within half a mile of at least one bus stop, 24% within half a mile of at least one light rail station, and 16% within half a mile of at least one subway station, offering good walkability conditions.

More than half of the parcels available for housing (1,507) are located in Southern California, with 800 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The report notes that, based on a new law passed last year, 41% of the identified properties qualify for the state's high-density development standards. These land resources owned by transportation agencies present a potential opportunity to increase housing development in California, helping to alleviate local housing pressures.
