en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 28th, According to Wedoany News, due to persistently low market demand, North Pacific Paper Company (NORPAC) has decided to cease its newsprint production operations at its Longview, Washington plant effective May 1st.
NORPAC will continue to operate other graphic paper grade production lines at the Longview facility. Concurrently, the plant also manufactures recycled packaging paper grades, and it is expected that the production of these recycled packaging papers will increase following the shutdown of the newsprint line.
According to a ranking released by Recycling Today in December 2025, NORPAC ranked ninth among the largest consumers of recovered paper in North America, with a consumption of 575,000 tons of recovered paper in 2024.
Fastmarkets data shows that after NORPAC's exit from the newsprint market, only one newsprint mill remains operational in the United States: Inland Empire Paper Co. in Millwood, Washington. Canada has nine newsprint mills: White Birch Paper operates three, Domtar and Kruger each operate two, while Alberta Newsprint and Kap Paper each operate one.
Statistics from the Pulp and Paper Products Council indicate that North American newsprint production fell by 18.8%, or 387,000 tons, to 1.66 million tons in 2025, down from 2.05 million tons in 2024. The report also noted that newsprint demand declined by 15%, a reduction of 151,000 tons, last year.
