Finland's Deltamarin and Spain's Offshoretronic Develop 20-30MW Wind Turbine Installation Vessel
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 2, Deltamarin and Offshoretronic signed an exclusive engineering consultancy agreement during the SMM 2026 trade fair in Hamburg, Germany, to advance the VITRUVIAN-class self-elevating offshore wind installation vessel to a shipyard-ready detailed design stage. The vessel platform includes two versions: a monopile installation vessel (MPIV) and a wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV), designed for the installation of 20-30MW offshore wind turbines and their large-scale foundations.

The VITRUVIAN-class MPIV has an overall length of 179 meters and a breadth of 75 meters, targeting the installation of large monopiles weighing over 3,000 tonnes. The design conditions adopted by the two companies include water depths of 30-60 meters, monopile lengths of 100-130 meters, outer diameters of 12-16 meters, and a maximum weight of up to 5,000 tonnes. Deltamarin stated that subsequent engineering work by both parties will continue to deepen around the hull, system integration, and operational procedures.
The vessel's core foundation installation solution was developed by Offshoretronic, whose VITRUVIAN concept was first formed in 2022, with further concept development completed in 2025. The foundation installation version employs tilting and lifting beams as well as a roll-on/roll-off system, enabling monopiles to be loaded, transported, upended, and installed in a horizontal position from the manufacturing site. The current solution can transport three monopiles with an outer diameter of 12.5 meters and a combined weight of up to 12,000 tonnes, or two monopiles with outer diameters exceeding 12.5 meters and up to approximately 15.5 meters, with a combined weight of up to 10,000 tonnes.
Offshoretronic's published solution eliminates the traditional large offshore crane and integrates the tilting and lifting beams with monopile roll-on/roll-off, upending, and lifting functions. The design also removes the sea-state-compensated monopile gripper, upending tools, and certain conventional lifting auxiliary equipment. The company's stated design targets are approximately 40% lower capital expenditure and approximately 25% lower operational expenditure compared to newly built large monohull crane installation vessels; these figures represent Offshoretronic's design estimates for its solution.
Both parties will also develop a WTIV version based on the same VITRUVIAN platform for the transport and installation of towers, nacelles, and blades for 20-30MW wind turbines, with blades arranged longitudinally along the hull. Deltamarin and Offshoretronic anticipate that turbines of this class may enter commercial application around 2030. This agreement corresponds to the deepening of vessel engineering design; neither party has yet announced the shipowner, the first construction shipyard, cost, construction start date, or delivery schedule.
