en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 28th, Constantia Flexibles has launched the patented lid concept ComforLid, which uses a dual-layer separable film to replace snap-on plastic lids and straws, claiming a 43% reduction in CO₂ impact. This dual-layer lid design complies with RecyClass guidelines on material separability and high-quality recycling. It consists of a polypropylene layer and an aluminum layer, allowing consumers to separate the layers for recycling. However, actual recycling performance depends on local infrastructure.
During development, the weight of the polypropylene layer was reduced from 40 grams to 35 grams, and the thickness of the aluminum layer was reduced from 50 microns to 45 microns. The product is manufactured using low-carbon aluminum, with primary aluminum ingots having a CO₂ equivalent of no more than 4 tons per ton and foil material below 5.5 tons per ton. It also incorporates aluminum from European suppliers certified by the ASI (Aluminium Stewardship Initiative). Through these optimizations, the company reports a 43% reduction in CO₂ impact.
Constantia Flexibles recommends ComforLid for ready-to-drink beverages and dairy products, such as openings for cold coffee or mini mozzarella cheese. Recently, ComforLid won two WorldStar Awards in the 'Packaging Materials & Components' and 'Non-Alcoholic Beverages' categories. Marc Rademacher, EVP Consumer Business, Group R&D, and Group Sustainability at Constantia Flexibles, stated: "This award is a significant recognition of our relentless efforts in product innovation. Our focus in designing ComforLid was to enhance material efficiency, reduce carbon impact, and support recyclability through design, while ensuring compatibility with existing filling and sealing equipment."
In related industry developments, Cosmo Films has introduced an anti-fog clear BOPET lidding film for food packaging, which provides a secure seal and easy peelability. It is claimed to be recyclable in mainstream plastic recycling streams when applied to PET trays. SÜDPACK has also produced SKINPro and Multifol Extreme vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging films, designed to extend the shelf life of perishable fish products and save material.
