en.Wedoany.com Reported - TAP Air Portugal plans to launch a direct route between Lisbon Airport (LIS) and Orlando International Airport (MCO) on October 29, operating three flights per week. This will mark the airline's first direct service to Central Florida.

The new route launches as TAP Air Portugal expands its U.S. operations. The airline has made minimal winter frequency adjustments to its established North American network, with U.S. traffic up more than 9% year-over-year. Orlando's long-haul aviation market currently sees over 100 weekly flights to Europe, Brazil, and the Middle East.

The new route is scheduled to operate on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with outbound flight TP267 departing from Lisbon and return flight TP268 departing from Orlando. The route spans 4,132 miles (6,648 kilometers), with a planned westbound flight time of 9 hours and 50 minutes and eastbound of 7 hours and 50 minutes. The latest November flight schedule shows the Airbus A330-900neo will operate the three weekly round-trip frequencies. Tickets for flights starting October 29 are now on sale on TAP Air Portugal's official website.

Since Portugal's daylight saving time ends one week earlier than Florida's, the October 29 and October 31 flights in the inaugural week arrive in Orlando at 20:10 and depart at 22:40; from November 2 onward, the schedule follows the regular winter timetable. This timing is primarily geared toward leisure traffic: passengers arrive in the evening with ample time to reach their hotels; the late-evening return flight from Orlando departs at 21:40, allowing visitors to enjoy most of their final day in Central Florida. The flight arrives in Lisbon at 10:30 the following morning, also facilitating TAP's ability to extend sales to European and African destinations within its connecting network.

TAP Air Portugal also evaluated using the smaller A321LR on this route. The A321LR is already widely used on transatlantic routes, and the Lisbon-Orlando great-circle distance of 3,577 nautical miles is below the aircraft's published maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles, and slightly shorter than the Manaus route TAP currently operates with the A321LR. However, published range and actual operational range are not the same, particularly when considering westbound flights in midwinter and the checked baggage carried by passengers.

Therefore, TAP Air Portugal has selected its flagship A330-900neo for this route. The aircraft features the Airspace cabin, with 34 lie-flat business class seats, and includes TAP's new premium economy product, Economy Prime. Located in the first three rows of economy class, Economy Prime offers a "guaranteed adjacent seat" guarantee, including priority check-in, priority baggage handling, fast-track security, priority boarding, an upgraded amenity kit, and upgraded main meal options.

TAP Air Portugal is the launch customer for the A330-900neo. Then-CEO Antonoaldo Neves once stated: "This aircraft is our airline's new flagship and the first to feature the new Airspace cabin. This innovative concept is designed to realize TAP's ambition of offering the best product in the industry."

TAP Air Portugal has continued to expand its North American network in recent years. Last year, it added the Lisbon to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) route, as well as a narrowbody route from Porto's Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). The latter initially operated only as a summer seasonal route but will continue into this winter with two weekly flights.

This winter extension, combined with the new Lisbon-Orlando route, brings TAP's weekly flights to North America to more than 82 this winter. This is the airline's largest winter schedule, up 7% year-over-year. Growth largely stems from deploying the A321LR on routes where year-round widebody service is difficult to sustain, which both keeps A330 widebodies on more profitable long-haul routes in South America and Africa, and makes TAP an attractive acquisition target for Air France-KLM and Lufthansa Group.

TAP is not the only airline bullish on Orlando's long-haul market. Orlando International Airport handled 57.7 million passengers in 2025 and added or expanded 45 routes during the year. This winter, the airport has 106 weekly long-haul flights to 17 international destinations, up 14% year-over-year.

Europe accounts for the majority of these flights, while Brazil represents nearly one-third of Orlando's long-haul capacity, operating five routes in total. Brazil is also Orlando's fastest-growing long-haul market: LATAM Airlines has increased its daily flights from São Paulo Guarulhos–André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU) to 13 weekly, operated by its Dreamliner fleet.

Orlando also added three new long-haul destinations last year: Air France returned from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), a route last operated in 2012; Iberia launched its first route from Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD) to Central Florida; and Discover Airlines connected Munich Airport (MUC) to Orlando for the first time.

In terms of frequency, the Lisbon route does not rank near the top among Orlando's long-haul flights, but its value extends beyond three weekly flights. TAP's Lisbon hub can connect Central Florida travelers to Portugal as well as numerous cities across Europe and Africa, and can also feed traffic to Orlando through its own network. For TAP, Orlando is therefore not a speculative fringe choice but a strategic entry into one of the United States' established long-haul leisure markets.
