ST Engineering and Hyundai Rotem Sign Contract for Taoyuan MRT Green Line Extension in Taiwan, China
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 1, the Taoyuan City Government's Department of Rapid Transit Systems signed a contract with a consortium comprising Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd. (ST Engineering) and South Korea's Hyundai Rotem for the GEM01 Lot electromechanical systems turnkey project of the Taoyuan Green Line extension to Zhongli. The project has thus transitioned from the previous tendering, evaluation, and award phases into contract execution. The Taoyuan City Government confirmed that the lot had been awarded on August 5.

The scope of the GEM01 Lot includes the procurement of 7 metro trains, as well as core electromechanical systems for the entire line, including track, power supply, signaling, communications, automatic fare collection, platform screen doors, and SCADA monitoring. ST Engineering will be responsible for overall project management and system integration, and will provide the SCADA, communications, automatic fare collection, and platform screen door systems, while also participating in the integrated delivery of key systems such as signaling, track, and depot equipment; Hyundai Rotem will be responsible for the trains and the power supply system. ST Engineering confirmed that its share of the consortium contract is approximately S$750 million.
This extension project spans approximately 7.2 kilometers, extending westward from the existing G01 station on the Green Line, passing through Bade and into Zhongli, ultimately connecting to Airport MRT A23 Station and Taiwan Railways Zhongli Station. Five new stations are planned, including one elevated station and four underground stations, along with stabling facilities. The electromechanical works are scheduled to enter the execution phase in the fourth quarter of 2026, with a contract implementation period of approximately 7 years. The overall extension line is targeted for completion and opening to traffic in 2031.
The electromechanical systems for this project will be integrated with the existing Taoyuan Green Line MRT system, adopting a compatible CBTC communications-based train control system, with trains configured to GoA4 fully automatic unattended operation. G25 Station will also feature extended platforms to connect with Airport MRT A23 Station. The newly procured trains are planned to be equipped with an intelligent obstacle detection system on the track, which will transmit detection information in real time to the operations control center.
Civil works for the Green Line extension to Zhongli have also been progressively initiated. Among these, the GEC04 Lot viaduct and depot works commenced on August 26, and the turnkey project related to Futai Elementary School is scheduled to commence on September 3. The tendering of the G25 Station works at Zhongli Rear Station will follow subsequently.
