Burton town centre cycleway extension

The £1.2 million scheme, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, has created a new two-way cycle lane along Borough Road, directly connecting the railway station with the Town Hall. As part of the transformation, construction crews also resurfaced sections of footways and carriageways, upgraded bus stops and traffic signals, and laid new road markings along the route. Completed over five months, the project forms part of a wider plan to improve active travel routes in Burton.

Funding for the cycleway came from £990,000 from East Staffordshire Borough Council's Town Deal grant. Staffordshire County Council contributed an additional £200,000 to carry out wider highway repairs along the route at the same time, reflecting the county council's new 'Roadmap to a Better Network' approach—tackling multiple issues at once to reduce repeat works and deliver better value for taxpayers.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said: "I am very pleased to see the completion of the new town centre cycleway extension. This new route will make it safer and more convenient for people to travel through the town centre, whether on foot or by bike. As well as establishing better active travel connections, the project has also improved the road, pavements, crossing facilities and bus stop infrastructure along the route, benefiting everyone passing through the area." He added: "This is a long-term investment in Burton's future that will help create a healthier, better-connected and more accessible town for residents, businesses and visitors."

The completed cycleway now connects key areas of Burton town centre with residential areas via the National Cycle Network.
