en.Wedoany.com Reported - U.S. company OpenAI and Singapore's Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 20 at the Asia Tech x Singapore (ATxSummit). Under the agreement, OpenAI has committed to investing over S$300 million (approximately US$234 million) to jointly advance a collaboration initiative named "OpenAI for Singapore."
At the core of this strategic partnership, OpenAI will establish its first "Applied AI Lab" outside the United States (OpenAI Singapore Applied AI Lab). The lab's primary mission is to translate cutting-edge AI technologies into deployable application scenarios, with its research directions aligned with Singapore's national AI priorities, focusing on key sectors such as public services, finance, healthcare, and digital infrastructure. To achieve this goal, OpenAI plans to expand the lab's local team of frontier deployment engineers and technical experts to over 200 positions in the coming years, assisting Singaporean agencies in integrating AI capabilities into daily economic activities.
In terms of talent development and ecosystem building, OpenAI will implement a series of initiatives to strengthen Singapore's AI professional talent pool. The company will launch a specialized training camp for mid-career software engineers (FDE Bootcamp) to help them master the skills needed to build real-world AI systems. Concurrently, OpenAI will collaborate with Singaporean educational institutions to conduct capacity building and research partnerships through methods such as establishing a local chapter of its online education platform, OpenAI Academy, and organizing Codex hackathons for educators. Furthermore, OpenAI will continue its collaboration with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and AI Singapore to enhance the AI application proficiency of tech professionals through programs like AIxTech.
To ensure that AI technology benefits a broader spectrum of society, the partnership also includes an "AI for All" initiative. This program will promote the development of citizen-centric AI applications to improve public service experiences; provide AI accelerator programs, including technical consultation and support, for local and international startups; and organize AI workshops for micro-entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Concurrently, the partners will develop localized AI content for Singapore's SkillsFuture courses to support nationwide AI capability building.
Mr. Chng Kai Fong, Permanent Secretary of Singapore's Ministry of Digital Development and Information, noted in a joint press release that as AI reshapes economies, businesses, and labor markets, Singapore's strategy is to nurture emerging industries, attract global frontier enterprises to establish a presence, and help citizens acquire new skills. OpenAI's Chief Revenue Officer, Denise Dresser, stated that Singapore possesses a strong tech talent pool, trusted institutions, and a clear goal of leveraging AI to drive long-term growth and improve lives. Through this collaboration, the company will assist more organizations in applying cutting-edge AI technologies to real-world scenarios.
