en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Swadlincote Leisure Centre and civic office project, designed by CPMG Architects, has received local planning permission.
The project team secured planning approval following positive consultations with the local community, which confirmed that the new leisure centre and accompanying office space will replace the existing Green Bank Leisure Centre and local authority offices, making way for a large-scale redevelopment of Swadlincote town centre.
The interior design of the leisure centre includes a six-court sports hall, two swimming pools, a fitness area, and multi-functional studios. Situated adjacent to a pond, parkland, and a golf course, the centre fully utilizes its surrounding green environment, featuring an accessible 360-degree route that allows users to easily move around the building and connect with outdoor spaces. Elements such as movable glass have been incorporated into the design to enhance the connection between the interior and exterior.

Office users will be able to co-locate with the leisure centre within the same parkland. The office space encompasses meeting rooms and open-plan work areas across three floors, designed with a focus on transparency to maximize views of the surrounding landscape, while sunshades help reduce solar heat gain and glare.
To align with Swadlincote's rural setting, biodiversity, and its location within the National Forest, the project team, working with South Derbyshire District Council, is committed to a design that celebrates and enhances the local landscape. This includes the prominent use of timber in the project and landscape design by Ares Landscape Architects.
The building will rely entirely on air source heat pumps, and rooftop photovoltaic panels will generate clean electricity, helping to reduce approximately 26,000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Alessio Granata, Senior Architect at CPMG, stated that the plans for Swadlincote Leisure Centre showcase a future-proof design that will support the local community for years to come. Working in partnership with the council and project partners, the design is about to become a reality. The practice continues to focus on human-centric design, and Swadlincote Leisure Centre is an example of this philosophy, aiming to create a space that not only offers leisure activities but also allows the community to gather and interact.
Councillor Robert Pearson, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said this is an exciting milestone for the project and for South Derbyshire. The proposals will deliver modern, high-quality leisure and community facilities. The scheme has continuously evolved through engagement with local residents, sports clubs, and community groups, and the decision to enlarge the sports hall demonstrates that feedback has been listened to and responded to positively. This development is a significant investment in health, wellbeing, sport, and the future of Swadlincote.
CPMG was appointed to the project in August 2025 through Procure Partnerships' Professional Services Framework. Will Cooper, Key Client Coordinator (East and West) at Procure Partnerships, commented that Swadlincote Leisure Centre is one of the most exciting schemes in the region for years, and the company is proud to play a role in the area's regeneration and to support the procurement process that selected CPMG as the lead architect and the wider design team.
With planning approval secured, preparatory work will begin in summer 2026, with an expected opening in spring 2028.
