Wedoany.com Report-Feb 26, H2Terminals, a technology company based in London, has agreed to provide hydrogen from its offshore energy island project in the North Sea to industrial users in London and the Thames Estuary region.
The company formalized its commitment by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Cadent, Britain’s gas distribution network. This MoU enables hydrogen distribution through the East London Hydrogen Pipeline, expected to be operational by 2030. The pipeline will link production sites near Tilbury and Thames Enterprise Park to industrial customers in central East London.
The hydrogen will be generated at H2Terminals’ offshore energy island in the North Sea’s 56th Quadrant, utilizing wind, wave, and solar energy. After production, the hydrogen will be liquefied and shipped via specialized vessels to terminals in the Thames Estuary. From there, Cadent’s pipeline will deliver it to industrial users.
In 2024, H2Terminals, alongside supply chain partners HiDROGEN and D3IM, signed an MoU with Lloyd’s Register, a classification society. This agreement focuses on evaluating the feasibility of the green hydrogen infrastructure project in the UK, including floating production and transport logistics. It also addresses regulatory needs, such as safety assessments and risk evaluations, for the offshore island and its supply chain.
Gerry Wilkinson, CEO of H2Terminals, stated: “This partnership with Cadent represents a watershed moment for green hydrogen infrastructure in London. By combining H2Terminals’ innovative production capabilities with Cadent’s world-class network capabilities and their new 100% hydrogen pipeline, we’re not just delivering cost-effective hydrogen solutions – we’re accelerating the industrial transformation needed to combat climate change.”
Kelly Manders, East London Pipeline Project Manager, remarked: “H2Terminals joins a growing number of producers who will support our journey. Their commitment along with others to supply green hydrogen through our network will create a compelling and unstoppable movement. Together, we’re building the foundation for a zero-carbon industrial revolution in East London.”
H2Terminals is collaborating with London P&I Club, a marine liability insurer, as part of the offshore energy island project. This partnership aims to develop insurance solutions for green hydrogen shipping, covering three types of hydrogen-powered vessels, patented liquid hydrogen storage systems, and features like onboard fuel cells and autonomous operations.
The initiative reflects a coordinated effort to establish a sustainable hydrogen supply chain, leveraging renewable energy and advanced infrastructure to meet industrial demands in the region by 2030.
