Equinor Commissions 100 MW Battery Storage Project in Texas, US

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Equinor has commissioned its largest battery storage project in the United States—the Citrus Flatts Energy Center in Harlingen, Cameron County, Texas—providing 100 MW of flexible power capacity to South Texas.

East Point Energy, Equinor's wholly owned U.S. battery storage subsidiary, was responsible for the construction and operation of Citrus Flatts. East Point acquired the project from Black Mountain Energy Storage in late 2023. The project includes 100 MW of power capacity and 200 MWh of storage capacity, capable of delivering electricity to the Texas grid when the market requires additional power.

This is the second battery project to enter commercial operation for East Point. In 2025, East Point commissioned the 10 MW/20 MWh Sunset Ridge Energy Center in Frio County. Together, the two projects total 110 MW of power capacity and 220 MWh of storage capacity. According to Equinor's estimates, this is enough to power approximately 30,000 Texas households for up to two hours.

Citrus Flatts participates directly in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) power market, with a business model entirely based on market activity and not reliant on traditional long-term utility contracts. The battery charges when electricity prices are low and discharges when prices are high, and can also participate in grid services that balance power supply and demand. Equinor's energy trading subsidiary, Danske Commodities, handles market operations for the facility and optimizes the battery's participation in ERCOT.

Andrew Foukal, CEO of East Point Energy, stated that the project will generate millions of dollars in tax revenue to support local priorities; amid surging energy demand in Texas, the project will strengthen the grid and help keep energy costs affordable for households and businesses.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that ERCOT utility-scale solar generation will reach 78 billion kWh in 2026, with solar power surpassing coal-fired generation in the Texas market for the first time; ERCOT battery capacity is expected to grow from approximately 15 GW in 2025 to 37 GW by the end of 2027.

Equinor is also developing battery storage projects beyond Texas. Four projects are under construction in Virginia, totaling 80 MW/160 MWh, expected to enter operation in the PJM power market in early 2027. At that point, Equinor's U.S. battery storage business will enter its second major regional power market.
