en.Wedoany.com Reported - Colombia's Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (MinTIC) recently completed the preliminary evaluation of the allocation of radio spectrum usage permits in the 900 MHz band, confirming that a total of 12 applications have passed the review and received preliminary approval. This allocation was conducted under a compliance assessment procedure known as the "Objective Selection Process" (PSO).

During the reception phase, MinTIC received a total of 35 applications from 30 different stakeholders. Among these 35 applications, 12 were submitted by community connectivity organizations, while the remaining 23 originated from 18 Network and Telecommunications Service Providers (PRST), which primarily offer retail fixed internet services to residential users.

Following document review and compliance verification, MinTIC granted preliminary approval to three license applications from PRSTs and nine from community connectivity organizations. However, the department emphasized that these preliminary approvals are still subject to technical analysis by the National Spectrum Agency (ANE), which will verify whether there is overlap in the network areas covered by these applications before finalizing the license allocations.

The allocation of the 900 MHz band is being carried out through two main processes: one targeting community organizations to promote localized network connectivity solutions, and the other aimed at small internet service providers, with the goal of expanding network access coverage, particularly in areas where access capacity remains limited.

MinTIC noted that the technical characteristics of the 900 MHz band make it a key strategic resource for bridging the digital divide. This band offers strong signal propagation, long coverage distances, and better penetration performance across different geographical environments.

This preliminary evaluation report will be open to the public from June 12 to 18, 2026, during which stakeholders can submit feedback. MinTIC will make the final allocation decision after completing the comment collection process.

This license allocation is part of the Colombian government's overall strategy to expand network connectivity services to rural and remote areas by efficiently utilizing radio spectrum resources and promoting community and small operator models.
