The parties signed a memorandum of understanding based on an existing agreement between Telia and Brookfield. Telia, as a Nordic telecom operator, will leverage Brookfield's AI infrastructure in Sweden to operate and deliver sovereign AI services. As Sweden's largest technical university, KTH brings AI expertise to the collaboration, enhancing the project's potential.

The partners aim to jointly develop and deliver scalable sovereign AI capabilities to meet the growing needs of Swedish enterprises and organizations in sectors such as healthcare, education, manufacturing, and critical infrastructure. These capabilities will include services based on large language models and software developed by the KTH team.

Sovereign AI services will be developed and delivered by Telia Cygate, Telia's systems integration division, which recently established a dedicated sovereign AI business unit and was featured in TelecomTV's recently free-downloadable report, "Digital Sovereignty: What It Means for Telecom Operators."

Telia President and CEO Patrik Hofbauer stated that building sovereign technology capabilities for Sweden and Europe is a pressing priority, and smart partnerships are the way to achieve this goal. He noted that Telia's secure and resilient services make it a trusted partner for society as a whole; KTH's research places Swedish innovation on the global map; and Brookfield has announced significant investments in Swedish AI infrastructure. The collective effort aims to accelerate cutting-edge technology, create new value for customers, and enhance the region's competitiveness.

Brookfield has previously announced plans to invest up to SEK 95 billion (approximately USD 10 billion) in AI infrastructure in Sweden, centered on developing a large AI data center with a capacity of up to 750 megawatts (MW) in Strängnäs to support the country's national AI strategy. Sikander Rashid, Head of AI Infrastructure at Brookfield, pointed out that KTH's involvement strengthens the partnership between Brookfield and Telia and is a significant step in supporting Sweden's leadership in AI. As demand for AI services continues to grow in Europe, success will depend on a robust ecosystem integrating infrastructure, connectivity, and innovation.

This collaboration also presents opportunities for KTH. The oldest technical university in Sweden, located in Stockholm with approximately 17,000 students, will work with Telia and Brookfield to explore the development of AI testbeds for incubating and piloting new AI startup projects, enabling researchers to access cutting-edge AI models more easily and helping entrepreneurs bring solutions to market faster.

KTH President Anders Söderholm stated that KTH is working across departments, disciplines, and research fields to cultivate the knowledge and capabilities needed to shape the future of the AI revolution, making the university an ideal partner for this transformative technology. The collaboration with Telia and Brookfield will help create a sovereign AI ecosystem capable of strengthening Sweden and Europe.
