en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) is finalizing a regulation requiring the replacement of analog gas meters with smart devices, a process that must be completed by December 2032.
This measure will affect approximately 8 million gas meters, primarily targeting supply points with an annual consumption of less than 50,000 kWh, which is the upper limit set by the Last Resort Rate (TUR).
As part of the deployment process, Incatema, a subsidiary of the ista Group, has launched a pilot testing program in collaboration with distributor Nedgia, aimed at evaluating the performance of new smart gas meters in different residential environments.
The tests are being conducted in single-family and multi-family homes in the Madrid metropolitan area, covering both city center and suburban areas, with the goal of verifying the devices' operation, communication capabilities, and adaptability to different building types.
The first phase has installed approximately 3,000 gas meters from manufacturer PLUM, but the project plans to include devices from other manufacturers to assess interoperability between different technical solutions.
José Feliz Martínez García, General Manager of Incatema, noted that replacing gas meters is a technical challenge that requires analyzing the characteristics of each building and verifying the operation of new devices in various installation scenarios. Incatema is participating in this project leveraging its experience in gas industry installations and over two decades of collaboration with Nedgia.
According to MITECO estimates, deploying smart gas meters will save over 800 million euros, while reducing household gas consumption by 1.8% to 5%.
The ministry also estimates that the measure will avoid emissions of 242,000 tons of CO2. Additionally, eliminating the need for manual meter reading trips will further reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1,100 tons annually.
