en.Wedoany.com Reported - Rivan Industries has deployed its first commercial-scale 1MW synthetic natural gas (SNG) system at its UK facility. The company states that this is the world's first fully off-grid, autonomously operating SNG unit, and upon full commissioning, it is expected to produce carbon-neutral synthetic natural gas at costs up to 80% lower than historical industry benchmarks.

From the start of operations to this 1MW milestone, Rivan took just over two years. This follows the completion of testing on its 100kW pilot reactor, which produced gas with a purity of 99.7%, meeting grid specifications.
The system integrates water electrolysis, carbon dioxide supply, catalytic reactors, and power management into a vertically integrated, independently operating unit powered by renewable electricity. By directly connecting to a dedicated off-grid solar array, the system eliminates the costs and overheads of traditional grid connections, reducing overall hardware costs by up to 11 times compared to standard SNG facilities. The modular hardware is entirely manufactured in-house, leveraging rapid iteration cycles and a simplified DC power architecture to capture low-cost solar energy.
SNG can serve as a direct substitute for fossil fuels in hard-to-abate heavy industries such as cement, steel, chemicals, and aviation, where direct electrification remains technically challenging.
The company plans to deploy an additional 10 units at its second facility in 2027, with the broader goal of bringing up to 1 terawatt-hour (TWh) of synthetic fuel capacity online within the next three years. To support commercial scaling, the company is equipping a 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in preparation for mass production and utility-scale deployment.
Harvey Hodd, founder and CEO of Rivan Industries, stated: "With the deployment of the 1MW system, we are clearly moving toward achieving SNG costs that were previously considered impossible. Now that the commercial-scale system has been validated, our focus is on deployment."
