en.Wedoany.com Reported - Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has commenced upgrades to the eastbound and westbound rest areas near Maude on the Sturt Highway. The project, jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments with $1 million, will include new toilets, improved lighting, and enhanced amenities. Work on the westbound rest area began on June 29, and both projects are expected to be completed by the end of August, weather permitting, with at least one rest area remaining open during construction.

"Highways are the workplace for heavy vehicle drivers, and rest areas are vital facilities that support driver health, safety, and well-being, helping to comply with mandatory fatigue management rest requirements," said Cassandra Ffrench, Executive Director of TfNSW. "These upgrades aim to provide truck drivers with cleaner, safer, and more convenient facilities, allowing them to take proper breaks and return to the road refreshed. Fatigue is one of the biggest risks on our highways, and providing quality rest areas is one of the most practical ways we can address this issue."
Additionally, a $2.4 million upgrade to the southbound Kyeamba Gap East Rest Area on the Hume Highway between Tarcutta and Holbrook will transform the existing simple stopping point into a modern facility featuring toilets, accessible amenities, a picnic area, improved lighting, two heavy vehicle parking bays, drainage upgrades, new signage, and upgraded safety barriers. It is expected to reopen on July 31.
TfNSW stated that these projects are part of upgrades carried out at more than 10 locations along the Silver City, Pacific, Hume, Newell, and Sturt highways over the past two years.
