en.Wedoany.com Reported - Irish spacecraft artificial intelligence company Ubotica Technologies has completed an $11 million funding round to expand commercial sales of its maritime intelligence platform, Live Maritime Intelligence (LMI). Launched in April this year, the platform is designed to assist satellites in analyzing data and executing corresponding operations directly in orbit.
Ubotica co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Aubrey Dunne noted at the SmallSat Europe conference held in Amsterdam in May that traditional space operations rely on ground personnel to process mission commands. Automating through direct in-orbit processing can eliminate the bottlenecks of human-in-the-loop and ground-in-the-loop, building autonomous systems capable of generating high-value information.
The funding round was jointly provided by Act Venture Capital, Greencode Ventures, and Atlantic Bridge.
Andrew O’Neill, Partner at Act Venture Capital, stated in a press release that when vessels disappear near critical infrastructure, nations cannot afford to wait hours for images. Live Maritime Intelligence demonstrates the value of in-orbit intelligence, transforming Earth observation from a camera into a real-time sentinel, starting with European waters.
Terhi Vapola, Managing Partner and Founder of Greencode Ventures, said in a statement that with MLI, satellite constellations will be able to rapidly detect threats anywhere across vast ocean areas, creating strategic security capabilities and commercial opportunities.
According to the press release, Ubotica's AI applications have been deployed on over 30 Earth observation satellites. The company has collaborated with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and UK startup Open Cosmos to demonstrate a satellite that can scan forward along its orbital path and analyze results before collecting images.
Ubotica CEO Fintan Buckley stated in a press release that the company has focused on in-orbit AI work for years, applying its knowledge to the security challenge of protecting vast ocean areas and critical maritime infrastructure. Live Maritime Intelligence can predict where risks will emerge, dispatch the right satellites and sensors, and deliver decision-level intelligence within minutes. This investment will enable LMI to be brought to market and scaled.
