Heatherwick Adds “Cabinet of Curiosities” to Seoul Convention Centre

Wedoany.com Report-Mar 21, UK-headquartered architect Heatherwick Studio has won a design competition to renovate the façade of Seoul’s Coex convention centre, replacing the current glass structure with a “cabinet of curiosities” showcasing fun things to do.

Working for the Korea International Trade Association, Heatherwick Studio’s proposal, also described as a “display case”, involves stacking modular “boxes” to host exhibitions, food and drink, and other attractions.

“Ironically for places that bring people together, most convention centres feel imposing and uninviting and are often devoid of public activity,” said the studio’s executive partner Stuart Wood.

“Our design will radically reinvent Coex to become a new cultural destination for the city of Seoul that attracts both locals and visitors alike.

“Varied and unusual our ‘display case’ design offers endless potential to curate art, performance, dining, entertainment, nature and is a true representation of Seoul’s creative power.”

Upper levels will host new indoor and outdoor areas for events and a public sky garden and viewing deck with views of Seoul and the Han River.
