en.Wedoany.com Reported - A new warehousing, cross-docking, and fleet maintenance capability is set to be added in Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa, following the launch of a logistics expansion project by SMSA Africa Logistics Group.
The project encompasses several core facilities, including a 10,000-square-meter multi-tenant high-bay warehouse, a new fleet workshop, and an expansion of existing cross-docking facilities. The cross-docking facility is primarily used for consolidating and redistributing goods through the regional network.
At the groundbreaking ceremony held on Tuesday, SMSA Project Manager Dirk Uys introduced that the project is located on an 80,000-square-meter site in Benoni and consists of four main components: a new headquarters building, a third-party logistics warehouse, a fleet workshop, and an expansion of the existing cross-docking operations. The warehouse will be integrated with the company's warehouse management system to serve contract logistics and distribution operations. Uys noted that the cross-docking expansion will consolidate operations under one roof, improve goods flow, and support future automation initiatives.
Johann van Heerden, owner and director of Cube Architects, stated that the facility is planned based on operational efficiency, with receiving and shipping functions positioned on opposite sides of the warehouse to streamline goods flow. This design aims to reduce on-site congestion, shorten processing times, and enhance overall operational productivity. The warehouse will be equipped with ground-level loading facilities and dock platforms to accommodate different vehicle types and future operational needs. The workshop is located away from the main office and customer activity areas and is designed with a drive-through system to improve vehicle flow and service efficiency. This design helps reduce unnecessary operations, enhance safety, and minimize vehicle repair turnaround times. The project also plans to set up dedicated areas for activities such as painting, washing, tire installation, and parts storage. Van Heerden said that spacious circulation areas have been incorporated into the design to accommodate modern commercial vehicles, specialized maintenance equipment, and future changes in service technology.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
