en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Maryland Port Administration (MPA) has acquired over 17 acres of industrial property near the Dundalk and Seagirt Marine Terminals at the Port of Baltimore, laying the groundwork for future port expansion, business growth, and job creation.

The agency purchased two adjacent parcels at 2400 Edgewater Avenue and 2701 Broening Highway for $6 million, located opposite the Dundalk and Seagirt terminals. According to port officials, the transaction closed on April 27.

In a statement, MPA spokesperson Richard Scher said that as the port continues to drive growth and expansion, future planning and use of the property will be part of a new master plan designed to help the Maryland Port Administration fulfill its mission of increasing port business and creating jobs.

This acquisition aligns with the port's long-term strategic planning efforts. Officials are developing a 20-year master plan focused on expanding cargo operations, increasing business lines, and enhancing the port's economic impact across Maryland.

The Port of Baltimore supports approximately 20,300 direct jobs statewide and generates over $70 billion in economic activity annually.

The Dundalk Marine Terminal is the port's largest general cargo facility, handling containers, automobiles, agricultural and construction equipment, and other goods. The Seagirt Marine Terminal, operated by Ports America Chesapeake, has an annual handling capacity of up to 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

State property records show the seller was Le Petomane XXIII Inc.

This land acquisition comes amid the Port of Baltimore's continued recovery and growth following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in 2024. The bridge collapsed after being struck by a support pillar from the container ship Dali, temporarily disrupting shipping operations.

Despite the setback, the port reported one of its strongest years on record in 2025, with public and private marine terminals handling 50 million tons of cargo. Officials also reported record container volumes and $65.6 billion in foreign trade cargo value, ranking the Port of Baltimore 10th among U.S. ports.

Last year, the port handled approximately 728,000 cars and light trucks, ranking second among U.S. ports, and led the nation in roll-on/roll-off agricultural and construction equipment shipments, totaling over 887,000 tons.

Port leadership has identified container growth at Seagirt and Tradepoint Atlantic, as well as expanding roll-on/roll-off, bulk, and cruise operations, as key priorities in developing the master plan.

This land acquisition marks another significant infrastructure milestone for the port. State officials, CSX Transportation, and Governor Wes Moore recently celebrated the reopening of the Howard Street Tunnel, which, after modernization, can now accommodate double-stack container trains. This modernization project is expected to add approximately 160,000 containers of rail capacity annually.
