en.Wedoany.com Reported - After receiving an order from the same client at the end of April, John Cockerill Energy has signed a new contract with Ansaldo Energia to design and supply a heat recovery steam generator installed behind an AE94.3A gas turbine for the new combined cycle power plant in Ptolemais, Western Macedonia, Greece.

The plant, originally a 660 MW coal-fired facility, will be replaced by a new high-efficiency 460 MW combined cycle power plant. This project will drive Greece's energy transition, energy independence, and decarbonization efforts, supporting the Western Macedonia region's plan to shift from lignite to natural gas. Operated by the Public Power Corporation S.A., Greece's main electricity supplier, the new station will reduce fuel consumption and operating costs while significantly cutting CO2 emissions. Its higher ramp rate enables rapid response to grid fluctuations caused by increased renewable energy penetration.

As part of its goal to achieve coal-free status by 2026, the Public Power Corporation is transforming from a coal-dominated national utility into a low-carbon, regional, technology-driven energy group, using natural gas as a transitional technology. This new combined cycle plant will supply electricity to approximately 900,000 households in the region. The order builds on previous collaboration, marking the fifth heat recovery steam generator designed and supplied by John Cockerill Energy's Belgian team for Ansaldo Energia, following deliveries to plants in Tunisia and Hungary.
