en.Wedoany.com Reported - Globe Telecom has officially launched Starlink satellite direct-to-cell service, becoming the first operator in the country to offer this type of connectivity after receiving commercial authorization from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

Compatible Globe users in areas beyond the reach of terrestrial mobile networks can connect to Starlink's low-Earth orbit satellites to make voice calls, video calls, and send and receive text messages via an app. Globe stated that the technology is primarily aimed at meeting communication needs in remote areas or when traditional base stations are inoperable due to emergencies.
This commercial rollout aligns with the government's push for digital transformation and expanding access to underserved communities, with NTC approval clearing the regulatory hurdles.
Users need a compatible LTE smartphone and an active Globe SIM card with a Globe Starlink plan. Prepaid and TM users can purchase the service starting at PHP 99, while Globe Platinum users and postpaid subscribers with monthly fees of PHP 1,499 or more can use it for free. The current service supports basic messaging, navigation apps, and SMS, with iPhone support not yet available.
Globe has deployed the platform in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani provinces to respond to a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, marking the first use of the service for disaster response in the Philippines. According to the company, the deployment provided emergency communication support to over 150,000 users.
Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz said: "This new satellite direct-to-cell technology enhances digital inclusion and accessibility. With NTC approval for commercial launch, Globe can extend coverage beyond traditional base stations, ensuring Filipinos stay connected even in the most remote or disaster-stricken areas. This milestone reinforces our commitment to improving lives, supporting businesses, and keeping the nation connected."
