Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 8, Grenada Electricity Services (Grenlec) has opened a search for consultants to assist with constructing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Maurice Bishop International Airport, near the capital of Grenada. The BESS will complement a 15 MW solar farm at the same location. This update aligns with Grenlec’s efforts to expand renewable energy infrastructure.

The consultants will offer technical expertise and management support to Grenlec throughout the project. Their role includes ensuring adherence to technical standards, safety measures, and environmental protections. The initiative, funded by the World Bank and Caribbean Development, is set to run from August 2025 to February 2028. Interested parties must submit written expressions of interest by April 11, 2025.
Grenlec initiated a tender in September 2024 for the 15 MW solar array at the airport, specifying that the accompanying BESS should have a capacity of up to 10.6 MW and 21.2 MWh. This system will store energy generated by the solar farm, enhancing reliability and efficiency. The project builds on Grenada’s renewable energy progress, with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reporting a total installed solar capacity of 4 MW by the end of 2024.
The combined solar and storage effort aims to bolster energy sustainability at Maurice Bishop International Airport, a key hub near the capital. The consultants will play a vital role in overseeing construction and integration, ensuring the project meets its goals. Funding from international partners underscores the importance of this development for Grenada’s energy landscape.
This move reflects Grenlec’s commitment to advancing clean energy solutions, leveraging solar power and storage to meet local needs. The tender process for consultants marks a critical step in bringing the project to fruition, with a clear timeline and capacity targets in place.
