Latin America reaches 2026-2027 roadmap to promote ethical AI

The meeting was jointly organized by the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Government Information and Communication Technology Office (OGTIC) of the Dominican Republic, aiming to advance a regional agenda for AI development centered on governance, digital infrastructure, regulation, and a focus on ethics and people's well-being.

Key outcomes of the meeting include the approval of the Santo Domingo Declaration and the launch of the 2026-2027 Ethical AI Roadmap for Latin America and the Caribbean. This plan will be implemented through five working groups, focusing respectively on governance and regulation, talent and the future of work, protection of vulnerable groups, environment, and infrastructure.

Christian Asinelli, Vice President of Strategic Planning at CAF, stated during the summit that the construction of this regional agenda began in 2023, through collaboration between CAF, UNESCO, and governments across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The agenda also covers topics such as digital infrastructure, education, the labor market, disinformation, and high-performance computing, which are considered key elements for strengthening the region's technological capabilities.

A prominent call during the summit was for increased investment in data processing infrastructure to reduce dependence on external technologies.
