Finland and five other countries plan to build a 1,500-kilometer submarine fiber optic cable

en.Wedoany.com Reported - A submarine communication fiber optic cable named "Amber Cable" is being planned in the Baltic Sea region. The cable, with a total length of 1,500 kilometers, plans to establish nine cable landing stations along the Baltic Sea coasts of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Denmark.

According to the official website of Amber Cable, the project is currently in "Phase One," which primarily involves conducting relevant research and stakeholder engagement activities. The cable's permit application and technical planning work have not yet commenced. Meanwhile, the project is applying for funding support from the European Commission's Connecting Europe Facility.

The project team stated on its official website that the geopolitical and digital infrastructure importance of the Baltic Sea region continues to increase, necessitating enhanced infrastructure resilience and redundancy, the adoption of protection-oriented infrastructure design, and strengthened coordinated regional planning.

Submarine cables in the region experienced disruptions at the end of 2024. Between December 2024 and January 2025, a total of five submarine cables were severed in the Baltic Sea area. Authorities initially suspected these incidents were deliberate sabotage by Russia and China, but subsequent investigations have been inconclusive, noting that the severances may have been caused by accidents.
