en.Wedoany.com Reported - Colorado-based energy company BKV recently commissioned two new carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities in Texas, located in the Eagle Ford region near Freer in South Texas and at Cotton Cove in the Fort Worth Basin, with a combined annual sequestration capacity expected to exceed 120,000 tons of CO₂.

The Eagle Ford site is the second CCS project to enter commercial operation under the joint venture between BKV and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), following Barnett Zero. The CO₂ is captured from a processing plant that treats natural gas produced from the Eagle Ford shale. BKV recovers the gas stream and, through a compression process, transports the CO₂ to a nearby injection well for permanent geological storage. The site's Class II injection well has been permitted by the Texas Railroad Commission, and its monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) plan has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The project's investment decision was reached in mid-December 2024. BKV currently holds all environmental credits generated by the facility, which is expected to sequester approximately 90,000 tons of CO₂ annually.

Karlis Povisilis, Partner at CIP, stated that the successful commissioning of the Eagle Ford project represents a significant milestone for the joint venture, validating the first-class operational standards envisioned for the partnership and demonstrating the strategic execution capabilities and shared commitment of both parties in scaling carbon capture infrastructure solutions.

The Cotton Cove project, a joint venture between BKV and Banpu Power US, captures and sequesters CO₂ from BKV's midstream plant via a Class II underground injection well. Over its operational lifespan, the site is expected to sequester an average of approximately 32,000 tons of CO₂ per year. BKV CEO Chris Kalnin noted that with Cotton Cove, Eagle Ford, and Barnett Zero now in operation, the company continues to demonstrate its ability to develop, build, and operate commercial-scale carbon sequestration projects. These facilities reflect the effectiveness of its integrated business model and the company's commitment to delivering practical and economically sustainable carbon management solutions.

With the commissioning of Eagle Ford and Cotton Cove, BKV now operates a total of three CCS facilities in Texas. The company is continuing to advance additional carbon sequestration projects, targeting an annual CO₂ injection volume of 1.5 million metric tons by 2028.
