en.Wedoany.com Reported - Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) announced on July 2, 2026, that the restart of its Al Taweelah aluminium production facility in Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD) is progressing ahead of its internal schedule. The plant was forced into an emergency shutdown after an Iranian attack on March 28 this year. Significant progress has been made in repairs, with 89 smelting pots successfully restarted. However, the company also stated that it may take up to a year to fully restore liquid aluminium production to pre-attack levels.
The Al Taweelah plant is one of the world's largest aluminium production facilities. To resume liquid aluminium production, EGA must gradually repair and restart all 1,262 smelting pots at the plant. The company has achieved several key milestones in the restart process: all anode removals from the pots have been completed, pot cleaning is approximately 90% complete, and solidified aluminium blocks have been cleared from over 20% of the pots. The first repaired pot was successfully restarted on May 26, 2026, and to date, 89 pots have been brought back into operation. Liquid aluminium output will gradually increase as more pots are repaired and restarted.
Two employees were injured and hospitalized during the attack but have since been discharged and are recovering. The Jebel Ali plant maintained full production capacity during this period.
The Al Taweelah Casthouse produced its first cast metal on May 4, 2026. The casthouse is currently remelting solidified aluminium blocks recovered from the pots. Additionally, final commissioning of the Al Taweelah recycling plant resumed in April, and production of recycled cast metal resumed in early May. The recycling plant is expected to reach full production capacity within six months. The Al Taweelah alumina refinery is expected to produce its first alumina in early Q3 2026, with its ramp-up speed depending on the optimization of the bauxite supply chain.
EGA Chief Executive Officer Abdulnasser Bin Kalban stated that the company is executing a clear and rigorous restart plan quickly and safely, and is exploring every opportunity to further accelerate progress.
