en.Wedoany.com Reported - Indian Railways achieved solid operational performance in June, loading 142.21 million tonnes of freight, up 4% from 136.71 million tonnes in June last year; passenger volume increased from 623.7 million to 638.1 million trips, a growth of 2.3%. Freight revenue also improved, with an additional revenue of approximately 4.3 billion rupees in June, up 3% from June 2025.
Several major commodity categories drove freight performance. In June, fertilizer loading increased by 19.1% year-on-year, other goods by 17.3%, iron ore by 9.4%, domestic coal by 4.9%, total coal by 3.6%, and clinker by 7.2%, reflecting the railway network's support for industrial activity and infrastructure construction.
In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 (April to June), Indian Railways loaded a cumulative 419.08 million tonnes of freight, up from 413.05 million tonnes in the same period of fiscal year 2026. During the quarter, iron ore loading increased by 7.44% year-on-year, clinker by 6.54%, and other goods by 12.16%, indicating broad-based growth in commodity movement.
To meet extended summer electricity demand, Indian Railways increased domestic coal transport to thermal power plants. Coal supply to power plants in June was 7% higher than the same period last year, supporting uninterrupted power generation and grid stability nationwide.
In passenger volume, non-suburban segments (covering short and long-distance travel) saw a 3.9% increase in June, from 289 million to 300.4 million trips; suburban segments (including daily commuter services) grew by 0.9%, from 334.6 million to 337.7 million trips.
Indian Railways is advancing the modernization of passenger services. The number of "Vande Bharat" train services has increased to 164, including the newly launched "Vande Bharat" sleeper service between Howrah and Kamakhya; "Amrit Bharat" train services now total 72, with 4 new services added in June to strengthen affordable and modern long-distance connectivity.
The Ministry of Railways stated that the sustained growth in freight and passenger volumes reflects the railway system's commitment to efficient logistics, reliable passenger services, and modern infrastructure. The railway system remains focused on supporting India's economic expansion through capacity expansion, improved operational efficiency, and customer-centric initiatives, while maintaining safe, reliable, and passenger-friendly transport services.
