en.Wedoany.com Reported - Bengaluru constituency MP Tejasvi Surya has publicly opposed the Karnataka government's proposed Bengaluru tunnel road project, calling it unscientific and incapable of solving the city's traffic problems. The project, initiated by Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, plans to construct a 2-kilometer-long, three-lane twin tunnel between Mehkri Circle and Hebbal Junction, with an estimated cost of ₹11.39 billion. Surya stated that this plan reveals a deeper failure in urban planning.

Surya pointed out that the government's own detailed project report shows the tunnel would reach saturation from its first day of operation, making the design inherently flawed. He said the report has already predicted immediate congestion, meaning the project cannot effectively serve ordinary commuters. He added that the tunnel would not provide a long-term solution to congestion.
Surya claimed the plan appears to benefit a small privileged group, including residents of Sadashivanagar and elites using the corridor to access the airport, while ordinary taxpayers would bear the full cost. He also mentioned that contractors would be beneficiaries and questioned whether funds might flow to the ruling party, viewing it as a political concern. Surya asked rhetorically, when his party members believe short flyovers cannot alleviate congestion, how can a short tunnel be considered a solution.
He urged the government to prioritize expanding mass public transit, including the Red Line Metro corridor, buses, and suburban railways, as a proper long-term strategy. Surya argued that public transport has proven effective over time, while more flyovers and tunnels would only repeat past mistakes. He reiterated his opposition, stating that his party would continue to resist plans for longer tunnels and called for better planning rather than costly engineering fixes.
