en.Wedoany.com Reported - The High Speed Rail Authority has selected three major construction consortia for the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process for Area Package 1 of the Newcastle to Sydney high-speed rail project. This area includes approximately 35 kilometers of twin tunnels between Berowra and Ourimbah, and the shortlisted consortia will assist in developing detailed plans for the project.

Shortlist of consortia for the high-speed rail tunnel project

The three shortlisted consortia are: Acciona John Holland Joint Venture; Advanced Alliance Joint Venture, comprising Gamuda Engineering, FCC Construction Australia, and Samsung C&T Corporation; and GoFar Joint Venture, comprising CPB Contractors, Ferrovial Construction Australia, and VINCI Construction Grands Projects Australia.

These consortia will compete to develop construction plans covering approximately 35 kilometers of twin tunnels between Berowra and Ourimbah, the new Central Coast High Speed Rail Station at Gosford, as well as railway, station systems, and associated infrastructure along the corridor.

The ECI process will assist the Authority in finalizing project costs, scope, design, and approval requirements, making the project ready for construction and supporting future investment decisions by the Australian Government. The shortlisted consortia bring international expertise in high-speed rail and tunnel engineering.

Advanced manufacturing is also expected to play a role in project delivery. The proposed "Advanced Manufacturing Facility" will employ automation, robotics, and precision manufacturing techniques to improve construction efficiency, while creating skilled jobs and opportunities for Australian manufacturers and suppliers. No major construction contracts will be awarded until relevant government decision-making processes are completed; if ultimately selected, one of the three consortia will undertake the tunnel works and associated construction for Area Package 1.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said the ECI process would support detailed planning for the first phase of the high-speed rail project. She stated that the new contracts fulfill the commitment to progress the first phase "metre by metre" and deepen planning efforts, with the three consortia set to determine the best and most innovative approaches to tunnelling between Berowra and Ourimbah, while ensuring Australians receive value for money.

Chief Executive Officer of the High Speed Rail Authority, Tim Parker, said the project would draw on Australia's growing tunnelling expertise. He noted that over the past 15 years, Australia has developed a world-class tunnelling industry, having constructed hundreds of kilometres of tunnels, and the Authority will work with the best to advance the high-speed rail project. Tunnel and construction experts will work with the Authority to plan the optimal route between Newcastle and Sydney, including tunnel diameters, the tunnel boring machines required, and how to build the first high-speed rail station at Gosford.

The proposed high-speed rail system is expected to connect Newcastle and Sydney in approximately one hour, with journeys between the Central Coast and both cities taking around 30 minutes.
