en.Wedoany.com Reported - The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Eastman have signed a new six-year master research agreement. Eastman will invest at least $3 million over the next six years to fund research, service agreements, and university-industry collaboration projects. This marks the third master research agreement between the two parties, with the partnership beginning in 2015.

The new agreement will deepen the decade-long collaboration, accelerating the development of innovative technologies in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, and advanced manufacturing. Past collaborative projects have spanned polymer chemistry, catalysis, additive manufacturing, and sustainability research, with applications in automotive components, textiles, food packaging, and sustainable consumer goods. Research supported through the collaboration has advanced joint-interest projects involving energy, sustainability, and other new chemical process technologies, laying the groundwork for a cleaner, more sustainable chemical industry.

Deb Crawford, the University of Tennessee's Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Economic Development, stated that sustained university-industry partnerships help translate breakthrough science into real-world impact, providing students and researchers with opportunities to address important challenges.

Steve Crawford, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology and Sustainability Officer at Eastman, noted that the strong alignment between research capabilities and industry challenges is key to the collaboration. The University of Tennessee's investment in developing students' technical skills and leadership has made the university-industry integration smoother and deepened Eastman's commitment to the partnership. Together, the two parties are advancing materials innovation, cultivating talent, and creating solutions that improve the lives of customers and communities.

Siris Laursen, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Tennessee's Tickle College of Engineering, explained that the two sides regularly discuss real-world challenges and jointly adjust research directions. This mutual trust enables technology development that balances scientific innovation, scalability, and economic viability.

In 2020, the two parties established the Eastman Innovation Center on the University of Tennessee campus, serving as a hub for collaborative research, project management, and student engagement. Current collaboration also includes on-campus offices, regular faculty and laboratory interactions, and an advisory board connecting Eastman technology leaders with university researchers. Jim Ziegler, Vice President of Eastman's Film Technology, Corporate Innovation, and Regional Business, stated that as the partnership has matured, both sides have been able to remove barriers and focus more on science, with teams working side by side, sharing campus space, and achieving greater alignment.

The agreement also includes support for student organizations, faculty projects, and campus activities, with University of Tennessee graduates becoming a significant source of scientific talent for Eastman. The renewed agreement will strengthen both parties' goal of translating research into practical applications, providing more opportunities for faculty, students, and researchers to develop technologies that address manufacturing challenges.
