Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 17, The joint venture of infrastructure firm AECOM and engineering services provider AtkinsRéalis has been engaged by the Highways Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government to deliver technical services for the Northern Metropolis Highway (NMH) project. This initiative aims to enhance east-west connectivity within Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis, fostering economic growth and supporting the region’s research, development, and technology sectors.
The project is set to improve east-west connectivity within Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis development.
The AECOM and AtkinsRéalis team will conduct a thorough evaluation of the NMH’s engineering feasibility and constructability. Their work includes analyzing alignment options, performing preliminary design, and assessing traffic, environmental impacts, land acquisition, and other key factors. Leveraging their experience in Hong Kong’s New Development Areas, AECOM will employ advanced technologies such as digital twins, building information modeling, and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly to optimize cost-effective designs and accelerate construction.
The NMH, a key element of the HKSAR Government’s Strategic Studies on Railways and Major Roads program beyond 2030, spans approximately 23 kilometers. It will connect Tin Shui Wai in the west to the New Territories North New Town near Ping Che in the east, alleviating congestion on major regional highways. The highway, primarily designed with dual three-lane sections, will feature at least eight major interchanges linking existing roads and New Development Areas.
In March, the same AECOM and AtkinsRéalis joint venture was appointed by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the HKSAR Government to handle the design and construction of Package 3 of the New Territories North – San Tin / Lok Ma Chau Development Node, further demonstrating their expertise in the region’s infrastructure projects.
The NMH project is poised to strengthen Hong Kong’s infrastructure network, supporting economic development and improving transportation efficiency in the Northern Metropolis. By integrating innovative technologies and comprehensive assessments, the joint venture aims to deliver a sustainable and efficient highway system that meets the region’s long-term connectivity needs.
