en.Wedoany.com Reported - The construction of the new Ferris Road bridge over the railway in Melton, Victoria, Australia, has entered its final sprint. The construction team is working around the clock, and the bridge is scheduled to officially open to traffic on July 15, 2026. Upon completion, the Ferris Road level crossing will be permanently closed, significantly enhancing traffic safety and efficiency in the area.

Ferris Road Bridge project enters final phase

This project is a key component of the Victorian Government's Level Crossing Removal Project. The newly constructed Ferris Road road bridge will span the existing railway line, permanently replacing the current busy level crossing. The scope of work includes installing concrete crash barriers and kerbs, followed by connecting the bridge to existing roads, and constructing lighting systems, traffic signals, drainage facilities, and pedestrian walkways. The new bridge also features dedicated walking and cycling paths.

Ferris Road is a major traffic artery in the Melton area, with an average daily traffic volume exceeding 16,000 vehicles. The existing level crossing has long posed safety hazards and traffic congestion issues. The opening of the new bridge will effectively resolve this long-standing bottleneck that has troubled local residents' travel. Currently, the section of Ferris Road between Abey Road and Hollingsworth Drive is temporarily closed, and the construction team is working day and night to ensure the project is delivered on schedule.

Following the opening of the Ferris Road bridge, three additional level crossings in the Melton area will be removed this year, including those at Coburns Road, Exford Road, and Hopkins Road in Truganina. The new Melton railway station is also planned to be operational within 2026. By then, the entire Melton transport corridor will be completely free of railway level crossings.
