en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Lázaro Cárdenas National Port System Administration (ASIPONA Lázaro Cárdenas) in Mexico has launched two strategic road infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing port access and egress capacity and alleviating urban traffic congestion. The combined investment in the two projects amounts to approximately 283.3 million Mexican pesos (about US$16.6 million).

Project 1: Port Bypass Road and SICARTSA Bridge Expansion

The first project is the "Construction and Expansion of the Port Area Bypass Road," which includes the Lázaro Cárdenas Port Bypass Road and the expansion of the SICARTSA Bridge, located on the SICARTSA Bypass between Melchor Ocampo Avenue and Morelos Avenue. The investment is approximately 214.88 million pesos (about US$12.6 million), with a construction period from June 2, 2026, to September 15, 2027. The main scope of work includes: widening the road from a two-lane two-way configuration to four lanes with added shoulders, widening the SICARTSA Bridge, constructing a new median to regulate intersection traffic, installing stormwater drainage pipes, and LED public lighting. The project aims to improve road capacity and safety, accelerate cargo transshipment, reduce travel times, and alleviate heavy traffic congestion in the urban area.

Project 2: Road Infrastructure Upgrades on the Port's Main Access Route

The second project is the "Road Infrastructure Upgrades at the Lázaro Cárdenas Port Entrance," covering the section from Puentes Cuates to the Lázaro Cárdenas Junction. The investment is approximately 68.5 million pesos (about US$4.08 million), with a construction period from July 21, 2026, to April 30, 2027. The main scope of work includes: converting an open channel into a precast concrete stormwater box culvert, widening the road from a two-lane two-way configuration to three lanes, constructing a new vehicle turnaround lane, and installing road signage and LED lighting. The project aims to upgrade stormwater infrastructure and improve the capacity and traffic safety of the port's main entrance.

Both projects are included in ASIPONA Lázaro Cárdenas' 2025–2030 Public Works Investment Plan, which has a total budget of 1.729 billion pesos (about US$101.9 million).

Port Expansion Background

The Port of Lázaro Cárdenas is one of the most important deep-water ports on Mexico's Pacific coast, and its throughput has continued to grow in recent years. In 2025, the port handled 27.3 million tons of cargo, including 2.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container throughput, a year-on-year increase of 9%; roll-on/roll-off vehicle volume reached 804,955 units, up 19% year-on-year.

In April 2026, Phase II of the APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas automated container terminal was officially put into operation, with an investment of over US$140 million, adding 65 hectares of operational area and increasing the terminal's annual handling capacity to 2 million TEUs. APM Terminals has announced the launch of Phase III expansion, planning to build a new 450-meter berth, bringing the terminal's total quay length to 1,200 meters.

In addition, the port is advancing the development of the Isla de la Palma logistics hub, with a planned area of 608 hectares. Under the "Michoacán Plan," the federal government and the private sector are expected to jointly invest 14 billion pesos (about US$750 million) in port modernization upgrades. The aforementioned road infrastructure projects are a key component of the port's overall expansion plan, providing access and egress support for the continued growth in container, vehicle, and bulk cargo transportation.
