Tens of Millions in Federal Funding for 69-Hectare Project Between Leipzig and Gera in Germany
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 20, Thuringia's Minister of Economic Affairs, Colette Boos-John, handed over the initial funding decision to Altenburg's Mayor, André Neumann. The federal and state governments will jointly provide nearly €5.4 million for the new industrial park project in Altenburg-Windischleuba, covering the initial planning, engineering design, and land acquisition phases.

The industrial park is located on the northeastern outskirts of Altenburg in eastern Thuringia, with a planned total area of approximately 69 hectares. The site is adjacent to federal highways B93 and B7 and close to the A72 motorway toward Leipzig and Chemnitz, offering clear locational and transport advantages. Thuringia's Ministry of Economic Affairs stated that the size and topographical conditions of the site provide a solid foundation for the settlement of large-scale industrial and commercial projects.
The funding comes from the German federal government's Investitionsgesetz Kohleregionen (Coal Regions Investment Act). Of the initial approximately €5.4 million, the federal government will contribute around €4.9 million, while Thuringia will provide about €440,000 through the state development company (LEG). According to the State Ministry of Economic Affairs, as the project progresses, the entire park development is expected to receive additional follow-up funding in the mid-tens of millions of euros.
The occupancy rate of existing industrial and commercial land in Altenburg has already reached approximately 80%, and inquiries from companies have also been received for the remaining plots. Mayor Neumann stated that the industrial park is one of Altenburg's most important future projects, aimed at attracting new businesses, creating jobs, and providing expansion space for existing companies. The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion by 2030.
The industrial park has been incorporated into the regional spatial plan for eastern Thuringia and the land use plan of the city of Altenburg. On July 3, 2025, the Thuringia State Development Company and the city of Altenburg signed a project development agreement. The funding is intended to support the economic structural transformation of the former lignite mining regions in the wake of the coal phase-out.
