en.Wedoany.com Reported - UK-based AECOM has been appointed by Murphy as the exclusive multidisciplinary design partner for Thames Water's £340 million upgrade of the Oxford Sewage Treatment Works. This investment is one of Thames Water's largest wastewater infrastructure projects under the Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8) framework.

The upgrade will increase treatment capacity by approximately 40% to accommodate future population growth and improve effluent quality discharged into the River Thames. As part of Thames Water's AMP8 capital investment program, the project includes enhancements to power supply, increased storm tank capacity, and higher wastewater flow rates, aimed at strengthening long-term network resilience.
Dr. Beverley Stinson, CEO of AECOM's Global Water Business, stated that upgrading major sewage treatment works is critical for supporting community development and environmental protection in Oxfordshire. As the world's number one water design firm, AECOM will leverage technical excellence to support Thames Water in significantly boosting treatment capacity, utilizing artificial intelligence solutions to build more efficient and resilient infrastructure.
Richard Whitehead, CEO of AECOM for Europe and India, noted that this appointment further solidifies the company's position in the UK water sector and strengthens its long-term partnership with Thames Water. Through collaboration with Murphy, all parties will pool their expertise to assist Thames Water in improving service levels.
David Mayfield, Senior Project Manager at Thames Water, stated that this investment will enhance operational resilience and environmental performance. By working closely with AECOM and delivery partner Murphy, the project ensures that Oxfordshire communities receive upgraded, future-proof treatment facilities, thereby protecting waterways, increasing capacity, and providing resilient wastewater services while reducing storm overflows.
This appointment builds on AECOM's previous involvement in Thames Water's Deephams Sewage Treatment Works upgrade project, which was delivered in collaboration with Murphy and Kier. AECOM has also secured multiple AMP8 framework appointments in the UK water sector, including Thames Water's professional services framework and Southern Water's capital delivery program.
