en.Wedoany.com Reported - Cellnex has renewed its framework agreement with Vodafone España, extending the contract term by ten years, valid until 2038. Starting in 2028, hundreds of new sites will be incorporated into Cellnex's infrastructure. This follows a competitive bidding process in which Cellnex competed with tower operator American Tower. This marks a significant shift in the Spanish telecommunications infrastructure market in recent years.

Vodafone Spain distances itself from Vantage, handing over some base station towers to Cellnex

The agreement ensures the continuity of approximately 2,000 access points already hosted within Cellnex's infrastructure, with the agreed technical and economic conditions remaining unchanged.

Vodafone Spain will migrate a small portion of its legacy sites to Cellnex's existing base station towers, adding several hundred new access points. Cellnex will not build new towers for this purpose but will leverage its deployed infrastructure to reduce investment and optimize the utilization of existing networks.

Additional revenue from the new sites will begin to materialize after 2028, when the existing contract with Vantage Towers expires.

This decision is part of the strategy driven by Zegona since its acquisition of Vodafone Spain in 2024. The British group views tower leasing costs as a primary opportunity to reduce operating expenses, marking a further step by the operator to distance itself from its close ties with Vantage Towers.

Mobile infrastructure contracts typically include renewal clauses linked to inflation, which has led to a significant increase in leasing costs in recent years. As a result, renegotiating terms or reallocating sites has become a priority in operators' transformation plans.

Previously, Vantage Towers, owned by Oak Holdings—a consortium comprising Vodafone Group, KKR, and Global Infrastructure Partners—served as Vodafone Spain's primary infrastructure provider and acted as its anchor operator in the domestic market.

Through this transaction, Cellnex has strengthened its position in the Spanish telecommunications infrastructure market and reinforced its long-standing commercial relationship with Vodafone Spain. Cellnex views the renewal as proof of the robustness of its infrastructure and the operator's recognition of its business model.
