en.Wedoany.com Reported - UK construction company Morganstone has secured the civil and structural engineering contract for Tata Steel UK's new Pickle Line, marking the project's transition from demolition and preparation to full construction.
The process section of the pickle line will install new acid and rinse tanks to remove surface scale from hot-rolled steel strips before cold rolling. This project is part of Tata Steel's broader low-carbon investment plan, centered on a new electric arc furnace with an annual capacity of 3 million tonnes.
Construction is scheduled to start next week, with Morganstone working alongside Tata Steel UK's Project Invictus team. Project Manager Andrew McGregor stated that this contract signing marks the official start of the construction phase for the new pickle line project, with the team transitioning from demolition and preparation to construction. He noted that the process section is the critical path for the entire installation due to the need to install a large amount of steel structure on new foundations. Additionally, the team is currently advancing procurement for the remaining civil and structural packages, as equipment for the new production line is set to begin arriving on site.
Morganstone Chairman Ian Morgan expressed delight at being selected by Tata Steel UK for this significant project, stating that the contract reflects the team's capabilities and experience, and is of great importance to Morganstone.
Over the past year, work at Port Talbot has accelerated, including large-scale piling for the electric arc furnace, construction of new scrap processing facilities, grid connection works, and redevelopment of the former basic oxygen steelmaking plant area.
