en.Wedoany.com Reported - Fortescue's Green Iron Project at its Christmas Creek mine site in Western Australia recently produced hot metal for the first time, marking a key validation of its electric smelting process from technical construction to actual hot metal output.

This pilot project aims to validate electric smelting technology and explore a technical pathway for producing green iron using Pilbara iron ore. The project is being commissioned in phases, with the team continuously testing, adjusting, and optimizing equipment and processes on the premise of safe facility operation, accumulating technical and operational experience for subsequent production scale-up.

During this round of commissioning, the electric smelting furnace has successfully produced molten iron, currently using a mixed feed. As the facility is progressively brought into operation, commissioning and process optimization will continue to advance.

Fortescue Co-CEO Dino Otranto stated that the first hot metal production is a significant step forward in advancing the scale-up of green iron production in Australia. He noted that Australia has been exporting iron ore to the world for decades, and the future opportunity lies in increasing the value-added of the ore and converting it into green iron domestically. Australia possesses renewable energy resource endowments and is also one of the world's largest iron ore producers—this competitive advantage should be fully leveraged, otherwise other countries with renewable energy advantages will move ahead.

Otranto also said that the green iron opportunity extends beyond the production process itself, encompassing the construction of a new industrial system built on Australia's renewable energy advantages.

Achieving scaled-up green iron production using Pilbara iron ore remains a technical challenge for the industry. Fortescue is continuing process validation through the Green Iron Project to accumulate experience for production scale-up.
