Mesabi Metallics Plans to Invest $15 Billion to Build a Large Steel Plant in Iowa, USA

The project is initially planned to have an annual crude steel production capacity of 7.5 million tons, which can be increased to approximately 10 million tons per year after subsequent expansion. The Iowa state government has called the project the largest steel manufacturing investment in U.S. history.

The project will form an upstream-downstream linkage with Mesabi Metallics' iron ore mine in Nashwauk, Minnesota. The mine recently began operations and is the first new iron ore project in Minnesota in about 50 years. In the future, it will supply iron ore feedstock to the Iowa steel plant by rail. Mesabi Metallics' parent company is India's Essar Group, which has previously invested more than $2.5 billion in related mining assets in Minnesota.

According to the current plan, the Iowa steel plant will adopt an integrated production model, forming a production capacity of 7.5 million tons per year in the first phase, which can later be increased to 10 million tons per year. The project is expected to create at least 1,750 long-term jobs, and the number of jobs during the construction phase could reach 5,000 to 6,000. The target time for steel production is 2030.

Mesabi Metallics' latest layout is built on its upstream iron ore resource base. The company plans to use iron ore feedstock supplied by the Nashwauk mine to build a vertically integrated supply chain from ore to steel. The Export-Import Bank of the United States recently also pledged $10 billion in financing support for Mesabi-related expansion, providing funding conditions for the subsequent construction of mining and steel assets.

Currently, publicly available information mainly confirms the investment scale, planned production capacity, raw material source, and the 2030 production target, but has not yet disclosed the specific construction site of the steel plant in Iowa, the main process equipment suppliers, or a detailed construction timetable. The Iowa state government has confirmed that Mesabi Metallics plans to locate the new steel complex in the state.
