Vietnam's steel imports fell to 1.36 million tons in August, up 3.2% year-on-year in the first eight months

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Vietnam Customs data shows that in August 2026, Vietnam's steel imports amounted to approximately 1.36 million tons, down 0.8% month-on-month. From January to August 2026, cumulative steel imports reached 10.37 million tons, up 3.2% year-on-year.

China continued to be Vietnam's largest source of steel imports. In August, Vietnam imported 740,700 tons of steel from China, down 0.5% year-on-year; cumulative imports in the first eight months reached 5.2456 million tons, down 10.8% year-on-year, accounting for about half of Vietnam's total steel imports during the same period.

During the same period, Vietnam imported 157,800 tons of steel from Japan, down 11% year-on-year; cumulative imports in the first eight months reached 1.2587 million tons, down 18.3% year-on-year. Imports from South Korea reached 103,300 tons, down 52.9% year-on-year; cumulative imports in the first eight months reached 941,000 tons, down 10.7% year-on-year.

India and Indonesia maintained growth in steel exports to Vietnam. In August, Vietnam imported 47,800 tons from India, up 5% year-on-year, with cumulative imports in the first eight months reaching 941,500 tons, up 8.7% year-on-year; imports from Indonesia reached 198,000 tons, up 164.1% year-on-year, with cumulative imports in the first eight months reaching 1.0441 million tons, up 27.9% year-on-year.

Compared with the same period in 2025, Vietnam's steel import volume increased from 10.072 million tons in the first eight months to 10.37 million tons. In August 2025, monthly imports were approximately 1.348 million tons, representing a month-on-month increase of 17% at that time; in August 2026, imports were approximately 1.36 million tons, slightly higher than the same period of the previous year on a monthly basis.
