Camp for Canada's Faro Mine Remediation Project Opens with C$90 Million in Support
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 16, Canada's Department of Northern and Arctic Affairs announced the official opening of Tsē Zūl Camp near the Faro mine in Yukon. The facility began operations in late August 2026 and can accommodate up to 288 workers, supporting subsequent construction and on-site operations for the Faro abandoned mine remediation project. The project has allocated C$90 million for camp leasing, site preparation, installation, and operations, with the operating period continuing until 2029.

Tsē Zūl Camp was built and is wholly owned by Dena Nezziddi Development Corporation, the economic development arm of the Ross River Dena Council. The camp is located near the town of Faro and primarily serves construction personnel and contractors for the Faro mine remediation project. As the project enters its subsequent construction phase, the on-site workforce is expected to continue growing.
The Faro mine remediation project completed the environmental assessment process under the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act in September 2025 and submitted a water licence application in May 2026. The Government of Canada is currently advancing the relevant regulatory approvals in preparation for subsequent active remediation and main construction work.
The Faro mine is located in southern Yukon and was once a large open-pit lead-zinc mine. Mining began in 1969, and the mine ceased operations and was abandoned in 1998. The site contains approximately 320 million tonnes of waste rock and 70 million tonnes of tailings. The federal government of Canada formally assumed responsibility for remediating the site in 2018.
The Faro remediation project is included in Canada's Northern Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program. To date, the federal government of Canada has invested approximately C$9.1 billion in the Faro mine remediation project through this program.
