Peru's Private Investment Promotion Agency Launches Southern Logistics Corridor Strategy Worth Over $10 Billion

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Peru's Private Investment Promotion Agency (Proinversión) has proposed a strategy aimed at consolidating the "Southern Axis" (Eje Sur) as the country's new logistics integration corridor. This strategy is based on 22 public-private partnership projects with a total investment exceeding $10 billion, with the flagship project being the Southern Dry Port (Puerto Seco del Sur), Peru's first multimodal logistics platform, designed to enhance trade competitiveness with Brazil, Bolivia, and the Asia-Pacific market.

Proinversión Executive President Luis Del Carpio emphasized that the Southern Dry Port is a strategically visionary initiative aimed at driving the development of the southern region. Del Carpio stated that a port does not need to be coastal to exist; it requires an advantageous geographical location, and Juliaca possesses such a position. Puno serves as a commercial hub between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The southern region concentrates over 40% of the country's exports and has both the right and the obligation to create opportunities, connecting with Brazil and Bolivia, and integrating the entire southern region.

The Southern Dry Port will be developed on a 52-hectare plot of land in Juliaca under the "Proyectos en Activos (Asset Projects)" model. This project is expected to reduce logistics costs and time, facilitate access to new markets for regional producers, strengthen trade with Brazil and Bolivia, and generate more investment and employment opportunities. After the Puno Regional Government allocates 1,386,410.60 soles (approximately $407,947) to Proinversión, the agency will launch a tender for technical studies to design and structure the project. The initial investment estimate ranges between $150 million and $250 million.

Mayor of San Román Province, Óscar Cáceres, emphasized that Proinversión's leadership in this project will make integration a reality. Governor of the Puno Region, Richard Hancco, expressed gratitude for Proinversión's continued presence in the area and highlighted that the project will help leverage Puno's competitive advantages to develop alongside markets and globalization. President of the National University of Juliaca (Universidad Nacional de Juliaca), Vilma Sarmiento, reaffirmed the university's commitment to providing professional talent for the implementation, design, and operation of the Southern Dry Port. This agreement will strengthen collaboration between the government and academia, promoting professional training, applied research, and the development of this initiative and other strategic projects in Peru's southern region.
