en.Wedoany.com Reported - ROBEL Rail Automation GmbH, a subsidiary of German track construction machinery manufacturer ROBEL Group, in collaboration with measurement technology company Vogel & Plötscher, has launched the new track inspection platform ROSPECT. This product is positioned to provide flexible and efficient inspection solutions for urban rail transit and railway branch lines, aiming to address the shortcomings of traditional inspection methods in terms of efficiency and adaptability.

Compact dimensions, maximum flexibility: ROSPECT offers ample space for integrating various measurement and inspection technologies—tailored to the customer's individual needs.

Traditional railway infrastructure inspection faces a dilemma. Manual inspection, while flexible, is slow, labor-intensive, and makes it difficult to deploy multiple measurement technologies simultaneously on the same track section. In contrast, large inspection trains have high requirements for track conditions, typically needing to operate at speeds of no less than 70 km/h to work efficiently, and involve long preparation times and high deployment costs, making it challenging to cover short sections and urban tram networks.

The ROSPECT self-propelled platform achieves a balance between flexibility and efficiency. The vehicle has compact dimensions, with a length, width, and height of 3.70 meters, 1.75 meters, and 2.10 meters respectively, and weighs approximately 1.3 tons. It can be transported by trailer and placed on the track using a forklift. In terms of power, the vehicle is fully electric and can be equipped with up to eight ROBEL E³ battery packs, providing continuous operation for up to 9 hours on a single charge. If extended operation time is required, the battery packs can be replaced within minutes. The vehicle features dual cabs, accommodating up to four people, and enables bidirectional operation on closed tracks without the need for turning.

Fully electric and zero-emission: Up to eight ROBEL E³ batteries provide up to nine hours of working time, while battery replacement takes just a few minutes.

The platform offers outstanding gauge adaptability. With a brief setup, it can operate across multi-gauge railway networks ranging from 760 mm narrow gauge, standard gauge, to 1600 mm broad gauge.

ROSPECT requires only a short preparation time to adapt to almost any track gauge.

In terms of inspection capabilities, ROSPECT can be flexibly configured according to customer requirements. The partner Vogel & Plötscher provides measurement systems for track geometry, rail profile, turnout geometry, and rail corrugation (RMF 1100). Additionally, it can integrate ground-penetrating radar for assessing ballast bed condition, or use 3D scanning technology for measuring clearance such as overhead contact wires and platform edges. The collected data is displayed in real-time during operation and can be integrated into Plasser & Theurer's tmc software for in-depth analysis and interpretation.

During measurement runs, the collected data is displayed directly to the user.

Excellent connectivity ensures that ROSPECT's location and operating status are always available, with measurement data seamlessly integrated into Plasser & Theurer's tmc software.

The platform has been validated in real-world operations. On the tram line in Graz, Austria, ROSPECT used the RMF 1100 system to measure rail corrugation on approximately 700 meters of track, accurately identifying defects in wavelength ranges of 30-100 mm and 100-300 mm. Subsequent re-measurement after grinding operations showed a 40% improvement in rail surface condition. The platform has also been deployed in Japan for performing inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based track geometry measurements.

ROSPECT combines compact dimensions, flexible measurement technology, and zero-emission operation, making inspections of urban networks and shorter track sections faster, safer, and more efficient.

In terms of business model, customers can directly purchase the vehicle and customize the measurement configuration based on their operational needs. Alternatively, inspection tasks can be commissioned as projects, with ROBEL-trained professionals using ROSPECT to perform on-site measurements and data handover.

Two operator cabs accommodate up to four people and enable efficient bidirectional operation on closed tracks—without the need for turning.

According to ROBEL Rail Automation, the development of ROSPECT directly stems from customer feedback on the need for safe, efficient, and flexible track inspection solutions. The platform has been tested under real operating conditions and is currently being deployed and promoted in the global market.
