Greek Prime Minister Announces Summer Fuel Price Reduction Agreement with Refineries

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mistiakos said on Friday that the government has reached an agreement with the country's major refineries to lower gasoline and diesel prices this summer, in an effort to curb the impact of the Iran war on fuel costs.

Since taking office in 2019, the Mistiakos government has implemented tax cuts and salary increases. The price reduction agreement was announced while responding to opposition lawmakers' questions about the cost of living. Mistiakos stated that the country's major refining companies have agreed to extend fuel price discounts until the end of August, with diesel prices reduced by 5 euro cents per liter and gasoline by 10 euro cents per liter.

Summer is typically the peak season for fuel consumption in Greece, as many citizens travel to rural areas or islands for vacations. The ongoing Middle East conflict has exacerbated consumer price increases in the country, where average household purchasing power still lags behind European levels.

Mistiakos' ruling party, New Democracy, holds a majority in the 300-seat parliament. Earlier this year, the government announced subsidies for fuel and fertilizers, as well as discounts on ferry tickets. Mistiakos also pledged that, following negotiations with local suppliers and supermarkets, lower-priced food and other essential goods would be available on the market starting in September. Parliamentary elections are scheduled for next year in Greece.
