en.Wedoany.com Reported - HOPA Ports has partnered with the Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation (MCBC) to restart a biodiesel production facility at the Port of Hamilton, Canada, preventing its permanent closure.
The facility will be operated by the newly established Biidaaban Renewable Energy, with the goal of resuming production. MCBC, which represents the commercial development interests of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN), holds a 51% ownership stake, making this an Indigenous-majority clean energy project. The collaboration stems from a memorandum of understanding signed between HOPA Ports and MCFN, aimed at fostering long-term cooperation and economic development. The plant is located at Pier 14 in the Port of Hamilton, one of Canada's key industrial and transportation hubs.
Warren Sault, President and CEO of MCBC, stated that this investment is a critical step in expanding Indigenous participation in sustainable energy development. The project name, Biidaaban, is derived from the Anishinaabe language, meaning "new day" or the first light of dawn, symbolizing a commitment to economic reconciliation and environmental stewardship. The partners noted that improved market conditions and biofuel policies supported by the Ontario and Canadian governments have made the restart possible. The project is expected to create over 70 jobs while providing low-carbon fuel to help reduce transportation emissions.
This initiative is seen as a major boost for Ontario's renewable fuel sector and highlights the growing leadership of Indigenous peoples in Canada's clean energy economy.
