EVA Air, AIT, and Formosa Petrochemical to Supply Microsoft with Approximately 15,000 Tonnes of CO₂e in SAF Environmental Attributes
en.Wedoany.com Reported - EVA Air and global freight forwarder AIT Worldwide Logistics have signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly advance green transportation initiatives. In the first year of the collaboration, EVA Air will provide Microsoft with approximately 15,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) environmental attributes to offset Scope 3 emissions from the airfreight of Microsoft's cloud infrastructure equipment. Representatives from Microsoft and Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (FPCC) attended the signing ceremony.

The flights involved in this collaboration will depart from Taiwan and use SAF supplied by Formosa Petrochemical Corporation. The fuel is produced from used cooking oil (UCO), and both the feedstock and production process have been certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system, with lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions approximately 80% lower than those of conventional jet fuel. The corresponding SAF environmental attributes will be issued and retired through the ISCC Credit Transfer System (CTS), an internationally recognized registry platform for tracking sustainability attributes, enabling Microsoft to account for the reduction of its airfreight-related Scope 3 emissions.
Microsoft committed to becoming carbon negative by 2030 in 2020, and to achieve this goal, the company continues to invest in SAF and other innovative emission reduction solutions. This collaboration reflects how corporate demand can accelerate the adoption of SAF while also contributing to the development of Taiwan's local SAF market and the broader low-carbon aviation ecosystem.
Since 2025, EVA Air has incorporated SAF into its scheduled flights departing from Asia, Europe, and North America, and has signed a five-year SAF procurement agreement with Formosa Petrochemical Corporation. Through its green transportation initiative, the airline assists corporate customers and freight forwarders in understanding their airfreight carbon footprint and supports their Scope 3 decarbonization goals with SAF environmental attributes, aiming to establish a scalable and replicable collaboration model that attracts broader corporate participation, expands SAF adoption, and drives the aviation industry's transition toward net-zero emissions.
Clay Sun, President of EVA Air, stated that achieving net-zero aviation requires collaboration across the entire value chain, encompassing airlines, fuel suppliers, logistics providers, and corporate customers. This collaboration demonstrates that when customer demand aligns with industry resources, the development of the SAF market can be accelerated. The company looks forward to partnering with more stakeholders to make low-carbon airfreight the new standard for global supply chains.
Greg Weigel, Chief Strategy Officer of AIT, stated that his team moves a significant volume of sensitive, high-value airfreight from Taiwan each year, and EVA Air is the preferred partner supporting the region's exponential growth, with the company's trust in EVA's executive leadership rooted in decades of relationship. By demonstrating the benefits of collaborating with Microsoft (a strategically important customer), EVA Air (one of its core carriers), and Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (a local SAF producer), AIT hopes to influence the market and inspire similar collaborations among airlines, producers, freight forwarders, and customers across the Asia-Pacific region.
The MOU was signed by Jason Liu, Chief Sustainability Officer of EVA Air, and Greg Weigel, Chief Strategy Officer of AIT Worldwide Logistics. The ceremony was witnessed by Shu-Ping Ho, Director General of Taiwan's Civil Aviation Administration; Eric Crowley, Deputy Director of the Commercial Section at the American Institute in Taiwan; Clay Sun, President of EVA Air; Keh-Yen Lin, President of Formosa Petrochemical Corporation; Ryan Carter, Executive Vice President of Global Operations at AIT Worldwide Logistics; and Vincent Shih, General Manager of Corporate Affairs at Microsoft Taiwan. The four organizations together form a SAF value chain spanning aviation, fuel production, logistics, and corporate customers, advancing supply chain decarbonization and the low-carbon transition of the aviation industry.
Since 2021, EVA Air has participated in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) and has been included in The Sustainability Yearbook for five consecutive years. In May 2026, the airline became the only Taiwanese carrier selected for the Dow Jones Best-In-Class Emerging Markets Index (DJBIC Emerging Markets Index). The Dow Jones Best-In-Class Index (DJBIC) is one of the world's leading sustainability benchmarks, evaluating companies across environmental, social, governance, and economic dimensions based on the S&P Global CSA. This recognition reflects EVA Air's continued progress in sustainability governance and decarbonization. Going forward, EVA Air will continue to expand SAF usage, enhance operational efficiency, and collaborate with global partners such as suppliers and corporate customers to accelerate the transition to net-zero aviation.
Founded in 1989, EVA Air is Taiwan's first privately owned international airline and is currently a member of the Star Alliance, affiliated with the global container shipping company Evergreen Line. Its fleet comprises more than 80 Boeing and Airbus aircraft, serving approximately 60 international destinations across Asia, Oceania, Europe, and North America, with plans to launch flights to Washington Dulles Airport on June 26, 2026.
