US Iberdrola 806MW Offshore Wind Farm Enters Operation
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 25, Iberdrola confirmed that the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind farm, located off the coast of Massachusetts, USA, has been fully commissioned, with a project investment of approximately €4 billion. The project has an installed capacity of 806MW and is jointly owned by Iberdrola's subsidiary Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.

Vineyard Wind 1 consists of 62 offshore wind turbines, each with a capacity of 13MW, located approximately 24 kilometers off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. The electricity generated by the wind farm is transmitted via submarine cables to the onshore substation facilities in Cape Cod, and then delivered to the New England grid. The designed power supply capacity can cover more than 400,000 households and businesses in Massachusetts.
The project commenced onshore works in 2021, entered the offshore construction phase at the end of 2022, and completed the installation of the offshore substation in 2023. The first turbine delivered approximately 5MW of power to the grid in January 2024, after which the project proceeded with turbine commissioning and grid connection in batches. In March 2026, the construction team completed the installation of the final blade on the 62nd turbine, bringing all offshore installation works to an end, with the remaining turbines subsequently entering the commissioning and testing phase.
During construction, a blade on one of the project's turbines failed in July 2024, temporarily suspending equipment installation and power generation activities. After reviewing the revised construction and operation plans, regulators approved the resumption of relevant operations in January 2025. Following the installation of all turbines, the project transitioned from the construction phase to overall commissioning, and Iberdrola has now confirmed that it has been fully commissioned.
Avangrid had previously been designated to undertake the operations and maintenance management of Vineyard Wind 1 after commercial operation, with services covering turbine, cable, and offshore substation maintenance, contractor coordination, control center operations, and asset management.
