en.Wedoany.com Reported - Automar, FS Logistix, and GTA have jointly launched a new automotive logistics rail corridor connecting Livorno, Pontecagnano, and Gioia Tauro.
Operated by Mercitalia Rail, the train service follows a round-trip cycle covering three segments: Livorno–Pontecagnano, Pontecagnano–Gioia Tauro, and Gioia Tauro–Livorno. With Pontecagnano serving as an intermediate loading and unloading point, car shippers gain a rail option linking central Italy, Campania, and Calabria.
This corridor was developed by Automar, part of the Grimaldi Group, in collaboration with FS Logistix, GTA, and the ALIS logistics association. Automar stated that the service aims to reduce reliance on road transport, limit empty mileage, and improve the balance of vehicle flows between northern and southern Italy.
Gioia Tauro serves as an entry point for vehicles arriving from the Far East and destined for the Italian and European markets. The new rail connection enables cars unloaded at the Calabrian port to be transported by train to Livorno, thereby reducing vessel turnaround times and supporting subsequent distribution.
Automar cited road transport capacity constraints and a shortage of professional drivers as driving factors for the project.
